About the Event
Gender reveal parties have received criticism from the LGBT+ communities, especially from the transgender and intersex communities, for reinforcing gender binaries and stereotypes. We've invited Megan Orcholski to speak at our next chapter meeting. Meagan is going to speak about her experience as a new mom who has chosen not to reveal the gender of her 2 month old baby contextualized within her knowledge and research as a scholar and educator.
Megan Orcholski is an educator, speaker, performer and generally fabulous human. She has been a Communication professor for over 10 years, specializing in gender, sexuality, public speaking, and performance. She recently finished her PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she wrote a dissertation focused on rhetorical meaning making at the intersections of sex, sexuality, and sexual violence. Both through Megan's teaching and research, she is particularly interested in exploring critical and queer theories to interrogate existing systems and boundaries.
Megan will speak from 6-7 PM. The remaining hour is reserved for sharing and support
