About the event
Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church and PFLAG Mt. Horeb invite you to view the documentary film, “The First Time I Saw Me: Transgender Voices”. A discussion and guest speaker, Rae Senarighi, champion storyteller through art, will follow.
The Netflix documentary was developed in collaboration with GLAAD (Gay/Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). It presents authentic transgender stories featuring Jamie Clayton, Jazz Jennings, Elliot Fletcher, Laura Jane Grace, Tiq Milan, Meredith Talusan, and GLAAD’s own Nick Adams. In the film, each person answers the question, “As a trans person, when was the first time you saw yourself represented in media? Really saw yourself?”.
During filming, artist Rae Senarighi painted a portrait of each featured person. Rae is a storyteller through art, pursuing accurate and celebratory representation of the trans community. With vivid and bold colors Rae creates portraits radiating the brilliance of the individuals and celebrate accepting and loving one’s self.
Rae currently resides in Madison, WI, but has lasting impact throughout the world. Rae’s dream is to celebrate accurate representation of trans and nonbinary people through painted portraiture worldwide. His “You are Loved” artwork has spread to over 300 locations in 33 states on billboards and countless yard signs throughout the country.
Netflix and GLAAD know that authentic media stories and characters are pivotal in creating acceptance. This is especially true for trans people, who have either been invisible in mainstream media or portrayed using inaccurate and offensive stereotypes.
This presentation is made possible by a grant from the Mt. Horeb Community Foundation.
