About the event
Eric and Stephani Lohman are the parents of a child born with an intersex variation. After the birth of their child in 2012, they faced intense pressure from members of their child’s medical team to consent to a cosmetic genital surgery on their infant. They refused, on the grounds that any surgery done for cosmetic purposes should be the exclusive right of the child, who should be old enough to provide informed consent. They have since become activists in support of bodily autonomy for intersex kids. The Lohmans are the award-winning authors of Raising Rosie: Our Story of Parenting an Intersex Child, and have been featured in a variety of media, including stories on CNN, The Chicago Tribune, the BBC, and the National Geographic documentary Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric.
Eric Lohman is a professor of media studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, focusing on gender, race, and class in the media. He is a board member of InterACT, the world’s largest intersex rights organization.
Stephani Lohman is a registered nurse, and has worked in a variety of health care and science fields for more than 10 years.
Eric & Stephanie will speak from 6 PM - 7 PM. After a short break, the remaining time will be used for sharing and support. Please e-mail us at chapter@pflagmoho.org for the link to join us on Zoom.
